Has Drake lost confidence is his ability to make interesting music versus throw shots at artists like Kanye who clearly occupies a lot of real estate inside his head? With so many Billboard hits, one would think that Drake has developed enough confidence to ignore all of the haters but after listening to this album - I’m not so sure. There isn’t one true hit on this album and after my initial listen, I found myself gravitating back to older and certainly less popular songs like “Scorpion,” and “More Life” that feel more authentic.ĭrake’s music and vibe is often perfect after a really long day at school because it’s not too intense or intellectually challenging which might be part of the problem. The cover art is a shot at critics for sure and a promise to keep writing songs about girls and the women in his life. The music press is torn about this one and more than a few have tossed “overrated” at the Canadian King of hip-hop calling his latest lazy and all over the place without any real sense of focus.
Drake’s latest has met with mixed reviews and it is wrong to suggest that he’s sounding a tad rusty not being on the road performing live over the past 18 months?ĭrake: Certified Lover Boy (Release date: 9/3/21, OVO) September is in full swing and some music heavyweights are back in the ring with new albums and singles to enjoy over the weekend.
